The Consulting Room:
Symbols of the Unconscious

A new understanding of symbols’ importance to the unconscious marked a decisive turn in the early development of psychoanalysis, attacked by its opponents as "Jewish Gospel." This section of the exhibition displays documents from the early history of psychoanalysis, presents sketches by patients obsessed by numbers, and sheds light on rumors and speculation surrounding the mysterious number 23.
