The Bank: The Value of Numbers
Berlin’s rise as one of the world’s most important financial
capitals by 1900 was largely due to its advanced communications network,
developed in great part by the efforts of leading bankers of Jewish
origin. They were among the first to recognize the importance of modern
means of communication and to establish an international network of
business contacts.
Visitors can take an inside look at international financial dealings in
the 19th
century by reading encrypted telegrams. They can also have themselves
connected by telephone to the leading Berlin bankers whose names
appeared
in the city’s first phone book in 1881.
