School: Figuring the Way Forward
Judaism has a long tradition of learning and literacy. Compulsory
school attendance was first introduced in Germany in the late 18th
century, a time when the Jewish education system was also undergoing
great change. Alongside religious instruction, Jewish children attending
"free schools" also began learning about modern secular subjects. This
section of the exhibition focuses
on these new curricula and pedagogical approaches. It displays
historical
teaching materials, shows Sesame Street’s Ernie writing the world’s most
wonderful story, and introduces visitors to the basics of the Hebrew
alphabet. |
